What are the factors that affect well-being?

There are many factors that affect well-being. It is a complex ecosystem, simultaneously influenced by several aspects, each with a certain weight. It is a term used very often in everyday life. However, we don’t always know what “being well” is. So, as we often don’t know, we have no idea how to get well.

What we know as well-being includes at least six variables: emotional, intellectual, occupational, physical, social and spiritual. All of these are factors that can make our lives better or worse. That’s why they are all connected to well-being too.

Although we didn’t realize it, on a daily basis we put all these variables into play. In that sense, be careful! Sometimes we think that well-being focuses on just one of them because it’s the most worrisome or rewarding. However, they all work simultaneously. Together they make it easier or harder to maintain a full life. We’ll look at each variable in more detail below.

Factors Affecting Well-Being

the emotional aspect

It’s about recognizing and accepting your own emotions and feelings. This implies the ability to reason coherently about oneself, and also the ability to be aware of one’s limitations and strengths.

Emotional well-being manifests itself as the ability to express feelings and understand others. Also as an ability to make reasonable self-assessments. Likewise, it is expressed as assertiveness and proactivity.

the occupational factor

We talk about occupational well-being when we get satisfaction from the work we do. In other words, when there is a good attitude towards work. It implies the ability to find a job in line with our interests.

Occupational well-being is manifested as the ability to develop new skills in the work or occupation that takes place on a daily basis, and also by associating work with personal values and with the desire to improve.

the social factor

The social is related to the ability to create harmonious and cooperative environments. Ability to establish constructive bonds with others, and also to let go of relationships, of all kinds, that cause harm or discomfort.

Social well-being is manifested through strong and stable support networks, based on mutual help and understanding. Respect is also an expression of social well-being, as well as the ability to set boundaries with others.

spiritual well-being

It has to do with the component of transcendence that is given to life. It is closely related to the meaning that is given to personal existence. Spirituality develops when you are able to see the facts from a long-term perspective, and also when you feel interested in adopting a values model and are able to be consistent with it.

As you can see, wellness is a small word that encompasses many realities. As we said at the beginning, all the factors that affect well-being are permanently in play. We sometimes lose sight of it because we are particularly sensitive to just one of these dimensions.

It is always important to remember that human beings are multifaceted. Therefore, our wellness ecosystem is complex. It is important not to lose sight of any of its component facets. They are interrelated, so when one of them is bad, another that is fine can balance it.
